For Soprano
Saxophone and Wind Ensemble
Brian
Balmages
Grade 6
This concerto for
soprano saxophone and wind ensemble is based on the tragedy of the
Apollo 1 mission, in which a fire swept through the command module
during a preflight test on January 27, 1967. All three astronauts
onboard were killed, including Gus Grissom, the commander. This work
makes extensive use of contemporary sounds and effects, seeking to
portray the events of that day as experienced by Grissom himself (the
work is dedicated to the memory of Grissom). Absolutely stunning
writing for both soloist and ensemble, this work is a wonderful
addition to the repertoire.

For Solo
Clarinet and Wind Ensemble
Brian
Balmages
Clarinet
Solo: Grade 6
Band: Grade 4.5
Premiered at the
2005 Michigan Music Educators Conference, Escapades was
commissioned by the Grand Valley State University Symphonic Wind
Ensemble under the baton of Barry D. Martin, with Arthur Campbell as
clarinet soloist. Since the premiere, it has been scheduled for
additional performances in the United States and abroad.
The piece gets its
inspiration from the title, which can be defined as "a usually
adventurous action that runs counter to approved or conventional
conduct." This piece is a series of changing
"escapades" (or variations) which develop and explore
different aspects of the opening thematic material. The entire work
builds into a free improvisational section before all elements are
united in the final presto.

For Solo Horn
and Wind Ensemble

F Horn Solo:
Grade 6
Band: Grade 4
This latest
installment with Canzonique Music is a wonderfully inspiring work. It
was commissioned by Jerry Peel, professor of horn at the University
of Miami, and was recorded by Peel and the University of Miami Wind
Ensemble; Gary Green, Director. Pele was programmed for the
College Band Directors National Conference in Baltimore (2004) with
guest artist Philip Munds, Principal Horn of the Baltimore Symphony
Orchestra, and the Towson University Symphonic Band, with the
composer conducting.
Pele was
inspired by the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire (or Volcano Goddess) by the
same name. She was passionate, volatile, and capricious. This lyrical
work is an emotional rollercoaster in which we experience a glimpse
of her personality from her quiet moments to her most volatile.

principal trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra and professor of
trumpet at the University of Miami. This work is based on two of his
most famous recordings: The Antiphonal Music of Gabrieli and
Respighi's Pines of Rome. It effectively makes use of an
