Korean Piano Adventures®
Teacher Convention Welcomes Randall Faber
Randall Faber
presented lectures, performances and a master class for the
twoday convention of the Korean Piano Adventures®
Teacher Association in Daejon City, South Korea. Piano Adventures®
has become the prestige curriculum for piano teachers throughout
South Korea. In some cities, only teachers trained in Piano Adventures®
are allowed to buy the books. The training team, led by Lea Kang,
provides teacher support through rigorous professional training and certification.
While in Korea,
Dr. Faber presented at five universities. Addressing hundreds of
college students and dozens of piano professors, Faber spoke of piano
pedagogy as pattern recognition. Pattern recognition. in its visual,
aural and physical aspects, provides a lens for much of piano
teaching. Music theory is the combination of visual and aural
recognition of fundamental combinations of tones. Technique is the
mastery of physical gesturesphysically coordinated patterns
that allow musical fluency. Piano pedagogy involves the sequential
acquisition of these patterns, with the goal of instantaneous
recognition of increasingly complex building blocks.
Faber urged
teachers in Asia to put more attention on thorough understanding of
theory (pattern recognition) at the early levels, rather than a rapid
push to difficult repertoire. He stressed basic, coordinate physical
gestures as essential physical patterns which lead, in time, to
superlative technique. Understanding of theory, technique and
musicality should not come late, in college. These should be the
focus at every level, so as to build a framework of pattern
"chunking." Perception of chunked units leads to deeper
understanding and more instantaneous response. Most importantly,
pattern recognition simplifies perception and execution, freeing the
musician's attention for artistic expression.
