Instrumentation: 5 B♭ trumpets, 5 horns,
5 trombones, 2 euphoniums, and 2 tubas.
Fanfare Canzonique was commissioned and premiered by Gary Green and the University of Miami Wind Ensemble at the 2003 College Band Directors National Convention. It is written in memory of Gilbert Johnson, former principal trumpet of the Philadelphia Orchestra and professor of trumpet at the University of Miami. This work is based on two of his most famous recordings: The Antiphonal Music of Gabrieli and Respighi's Pines of Rome. It effectively makes use of an antiphonal choir and is an excellent concert opener. (3:30)
